The Byzantine Adventure
Gods, Caesars, and Epic Battles: Welcome to the New Rome!
Would you like to search for traces of the Roman Empire? Was it completely destroyed by the barbarian invaders or was it transformed by cultural curiosities like gladiator fights into a world of towering golden domes and new emperors?
Did the old world of Roman Empire transfigure into a new cultural bridge between the classical world and the Renaissance?
This course will take you on a Byzantine adventure to try to solve these mysteries.
We will study the clash of cultures in different times by different groups, learning how they competed, combined, and eventually fused together into a new, amazing, and enigmatic Byzantine empire that endured for a millennium.
The new Empire maintained Roman law and ruled a massive territory. Greek, the language of the ancient philosophers, was widely spoken, as a new powerful religion, Christianity, shaped gold mosaics and scholastic debates.
We will explore how invasions changed the map of the world, and forced the Empire to adapt. We will examine amazing new types of architecture (like the Hagia Sophia) and see new breathtaking visual art that sparkles with gold.
We will trace the crusades and other dramatic stories of valiant and pious knights travelling to the Promised land.
In doing all of the above, we will discover how the ideas, laws, and art of the Byzantine millennium slowly paved the way for the new world from Russia to Italy!
